Market Stand Manager

We are seeking a Market Stand Manager to join our team. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining the positive image of the Sakuma Family business by educating the public of its history, mission and values.  The Market Stand Manager is responsible for the efficient and profitable management of the Market Stand operations by increasing sales and minimizing labor and inventory costs for maximum profitability.  This position is seasonal, beginning in the Spring as a part-time position (April – May) and then for the Summer until Fall changes to a full-time position (June – beginning of October).  

Essential functions include:

  • Create, revise, and maintain written procedures and process for the effective and efficient operations of the Market Stand.

  • Prepare a budget for review and approval by the Director of Profitability Development and Marketing.

  • Manage the staff and daily operations of the Market Stand, including the Ice Cream House, Kitchen House, U-Pick, and other special events held at the Market Stand.

  • Prepare work schedules to maintain staffing at the appropriate levels to operate at peak efficiency without compromising customer service and in developing continuity and depth in key positions.

  • Insure the safe and secure handling of cash and sales receipts of the Market Stand Operations in accordance with Holding Company internal control procedures.

  • Prepare and maintain training manuals and operation procedures.  Provide orientation and training of all seasonal employees, including service and sales training, cash handling, and use of the Point of Sales (POS) system.

  • Coordinate and schedule safety and first aid training of all Market Stand employees.

  • Work in coordination with the Human Resources Manager on all personnel actions, including but not limited to interviewing, hiring, preparing pay rates and schedules, preparing performance appraisals, and making recommendations for promotions, wage adjustments, demotions, disciplinary actions, and discharge.

  • Oversee the opening and closing of the Market Stand Operations and ensure daily submittal of cash, check, and credit receipts and sales information to the Accounting Manager in accordance with Holding Company internal control procedures.

  • Provide accurate and timely data on sales, costs, inventory, and other related income and expense, and cash flow information for the creation of annual and long-term budgets.  Manage operations based on an approved budget.

  • Assist the Director of Profitability Development and Marketing in the short and long-term strategic planning and implementation of the Market Stand operations as viable and self-sustaining profit centers.

  • In coordination with the Accounting Manager, manage Accounts Payable accounts with distributors and coordinate purchases, shipments, and deliveries of items. Receive and record inventory and manage inventory within approved budget.

  • Oversee and coordinate the viewing, testing, and finalizing recipes for existing and new bakery products.

  • Create and implement a sales consignment program featuring local artisans and crafters.

  • Coordinate the cleaning and maintenance of Market Stand buildings prior to opening and at the close of the season.

  • Effectively and efficiently manage the Market Stand Operations in accordance with the attached organizational structure.

  • Represent the Market Stand at sales and marketing conferences and events that promote the farm-to-market/farm-to-table and eat “local” strategy.

  • Attend trade shows for ideas and inventory purchases for Market Stand.

  • Coordinate and guide field trips and tours for schools, camps, church groups, special interest groups in support of community service and involvement.

  • Attend Holding Company staff meetings and participate in the research and development of new markets, procedures, and processes to maximize efficiency and profitability of the Market Stand and Ice Cream House.

  • Perform related duties that may not be specifically listed in the Position Description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to provide excellent customer service, tactfully address customer complaints; and train, manage, and motivate employees.

  • Knowledge and experience in effective marketing and public relations.

  • Knowledge of overall farm and business operations and the ability to assess future needs as they relate to the overall Market concept.

  • Knowledge of standard accounting practices and procedures.

  • Strong mathematical skills

  • Skilled in inventory control and management.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to use computer spreadsheets, word processing systems and electronic communications.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor or Associate degree in management, marketing, public relations, education or related field required.  A minimum of two (2) years previous work experience in the agricultural industry is preferred.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted that provides the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors (office environment and at the Market Stand).  Travel in and outside the state may be required to attend market shows, conferences, and other meetings.  Physical requirements include minimal lifting, pushing, and pulling.
