Position Description

Position Title: Intern to Grower Services Manager
Division: Sakuma Bros. Processing, Inc.
Reports To: Grower Services Manager
Supervises: N/A
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY: Provides support to the Grower Services Manager during the summer harvest. Training will be provided in all areas of responsibility.


Communicate on a regular basis with the Grower Services Manager to keep them apprised of daily activities.

Maintain spray records for multiple growers which includes validation that spray records meet buyer’s specifications.

Take and document irrigation water samples.

Assist in projection of daily fruit yields and delivery times.

Assist in assessing fruit quality both in and out of the field. This applies to Strawberries, Blueberries, and Blackberries.

Maintain organized grower files.

Assist in food safety documentation.

Assist in preparation for multiple food safety audits.

Operate the receiving scale during peak hours.

Assist in berry container and packaging (flats, lugs, totes and barrels) inventory.

Perform related duties as required. Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the Position Description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.

SUPERVISORY: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Current college student obtaining a four-year degree in a related area of focus and/or recent graduate of a four-year university.

General understanding of Good Agricultural Practices.
General understanding of pesticide record keeping.
General understanding of plant pathology and IPM
General understanding of fruit quality.
General understanding of berry harvesting techniques
Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationship with multiple growers.
Ability to maintain a positive attitude in demanding harvest situations.
Ability to navigate Skagit County and Whatcom County fields.
Ability to calculate yields.
Ability to map fields.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Valid Washington State driver’s license and CPR and First Aid certificates (can be obtained upon hire).

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Working around processing equipment/machinery and farm equipment/machinery is required, as well as working outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Travel is required. Physical requirements include working extended hours during harvest season.

Hazards: Potential hazards exist when working around chemicals, equipment and machinery.
